Hey, Writer: Vulnerability Requires Boundaries
Brene Brown and The Truman Show blew me away today.
I have never read a Brene Brown book.
I’m not sure why, really, except that sometimes I resist the super popular. When everyone loves something, the inner rebel in me kicks in.
It isn’t that I don’t love Brene Brown, it’s that I have literally never taken a look at her work. All I know about her is that a zillion women on Pinterest and Instagram make memes of her words.
But, this afternoon I watched the talk she gave that was recorded for Netflix. It’s about vulnerability and courage — as most of her work is.
And I really loved it. I was finally sucked in.
There was something that she said that really struck a chord with me.
Vulnerability minus boundaries is not vulnerability.
Specifically, she said that live streaming your bikini wax is not vulnerability.
Vulnerability is not been ogled. It’s not a train wreck it’s impossible to look away from. It’s not a bid for attention. As a writer, it’s not oversharing just because you think it’s not okay to hold something back.
